Tablet Vs Laptop: What's Best For College?

Tablets and laptops have merits and disadvantages, much like any other device. College life presents a special challenge to choosing the right device, as there is no environment that is quite like college, in the way we use our devices.

College is the ultimate BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) setting, and one that is no different than the most chaotic work environment. Whichever device you choose, it will need to be hauled from class to class, plugged in, unplugged, recharged more frequently than any other portable computer, with a very heavy expected workload.

Health concerns

On an average college day, the weight that a laptop can add to a backpack can be considerable, when taking into account additional batteries, external drives, and other accessories. Granted that laptops have shed most of their weight in recent years, with the MacBook Pro weighing in less than 5 pounds, and the MacBook Air, less than 3, it's important to understand the applications and hardware required by your curriculum, and whether the additional computing power and options of a laptop is truly necessary, to avoid straining your back and shoulders between classes.

Performance

Battery power is a frequent concern in the classroom, as charging options may be limited, depending on the facilities available.

While laptops can last up to 8 hours, depending on usage, mobile power options tend to favor smaller devices, like tablets and phones, that can be charged using relatively inexpensive battery packs.

Processing speed, between laptops and tablets, is very difficult to compare. There are radical differences separating a desktop operating system, commonly found on laptops, and a mobile operating system, such as iOS or Android. Mobile apps, and web services, go a long way to mimic the functionality of desktop software and productivity applications. Microsoft Office, for example, is offered as a mobile app on iOS and Android, and is also available as a web application, providing tools for word processing, and other document editing applications. Google Drive is another ubiquitous example of a complete office productivity suite, available as an app, or through any regular web browser.

Sometimes office applications are not sufficient, especially when additional software is needed, such as graphic applications, like Photoshop or Illustrator, or web and software development environments, like Microsoft Visual C, Dreamweaver and other IDEs.

These applications require a desktop operating system, as well as enough memory and processing power to function. Data storage is also an issue, as these applications can produce very large files.

Durability

Laptops, as mentioned earlier, have many moving parts, such as optical drive decks, fans, tilting displays, and other internal components that can wear out and break down faster, when put through daily academic applications.

Tablets, on the other hand, have hardly any moving parts at all, thanks to fanlessdesign and Solid State storage drives. This is a huge advantage over laptops, as tablets don't suffer gravity or inertia, nearly as much, when transported in different positions or when shaken up.

Convenience and portability

Another big advantage of choosing tablets over laptops, is obvious when it comes to note-taking scenarios, in which the ability to write directly on screen with a stylus pen, or record audio and video (where allowed), becomes crucial during lectures. The bulk of a laptop can be obtrusive if the whole point is simply to make notes.

What's better in the end?

By now it should be obvious: it's not about the device itself. It's about careful planning. College is a complex environment in which using a device over another means the difference between "just right" and "overkill".

When a decision needs to be made between a tablet and a laptop, that decision will always have some shortcomings. Where a feature-packed laptop may seem a great one-size-fits-all choice, when used during a lecture or a regular class, it will turn into a cumbersome extension of your desk, and a distraction from class activities.

Choosing a tablet is a wise choice for a lecture, or a generic class requiring note taking or limited word processing, but when more demanding tasks require more power and a full-size keyboard, and a desktop operating system, the opposite problem occurs.

Netbooks

Netbooks, or hybrid laptops may offer a good compromise, by providing a complete desktop-like operating system, like Windows RT, or Chrome OS, at a lower cost than regular laptops, in a smaller, more lightweight package. Some of these laptops come in tablet form, such as the Microsoft Surface. These devices double as tablet, support stylus pens and do not require an Internet connection to work.

At the low-end of the price range, Chromebooks offer a good alternative at a considerably cheaper price, with the downside of requiring an Internet connection to perform most useful tasks, although there is a growing number of applications that can be used offline, on the Chrome OS.

Neither Windows RT, nor Google Chrome OS support high-end applications, beyond their separate pool of apps from their respective app stores, in which case a proper MacBook or Windows laptop is still necessary.

Apple Laptops Review - Latest Laptop Series, History, Trend, Strengths and Weaknesses

Apple Inc., formerly known as Apple Computer, Inc., can be referred to as one of the multinational corporations based in America with focus on manufacturing and designing consumer electronics, along with closely-related software products. Established on 1st of April, 1976 in Cupertino (California) and having incorporated on 3rd of January, 1977, company was named 'Apple Computer, Inc.' till the year 2006, but had the word 'Computer' dropped on 9th of January, 2007, in order to have ongoing expansion of company in to market of consumer electronics, apart from conventional focus on the personal computers. Apple can boast of having strength of 20,000 employees all over the world. The time period between 1989 and 1991 was known as the 'Golden Age' in the expansion of Apple. Apple went on with the introduction of 'Apple Portable'. It was, however, not accepted by the masses. Later on, Apple went for its advanced version called 'Powerbook 100'. It was then that Apple notebooks started gaining recognition. Apple's reputation started growing and there was no looking back after that. The nineties were a very difficult time for apple due to strategic decisions and for many customer confusion, Apple market share and results plunged to an almost extinction. It took the return of Steve Jobs and his vision to resuscitate the brand through a series of innovations and complete redesign of the product offering and marketing.

Apple Laptops

Apple is amongst the most renowned words in the computer industry. Products manufactured by Apple benefit from an amazing aura and in general are superior to its competition both from the technical and software aspect. The principal reason behind the success of Apple products is that they are innovative, intuitive and different than the rest of the marketplace. Their ranges of desktops, laptops and the popular iPods have made Apple one of the most trustworthy brands in the electronics market. Lately iPhone has been added to this successful product offering (although some technical issues have shown that even Apple can have some issues with its products).

Today, Apple notebooks are called 'MacBooks'. In the year 2005, apple went on to join hands with Intel Corporation in order to opt for dual core processor technology. Intel 950 media accelerator motherboards were also used for this purpose. These processors are amongst the most sophisticated ones with 2 cores on one chipwhich has translated in less power usage and speed increase.

Apple notebooks are proposed in three lines, they are the MacBook which are the cheapest models designed for everyday users, the MacBook Air for the road warriors and MacBook pro for the heavy users.

The MacBook is equipped with 13.3 -inch TFT display. The frequency of its processor is either 2.1 or 2.4 GHz based on the model you choose. The RAM is either 1 GB or 2 GB. The hard drive space goes from 120 GB to 250 GB; there is a DVD burner, built in camera, wifi, Bluetooth and all the necessary connections. The cost goes from $1,099 to $1,499. For a Mac that's as cheap as it gets. If you are used to Windows laptop pricing, that may seem like a lot of money, but you are buying a MAC, that means top product, top software at a top price. Just suggest to a Mac user to switch to windows laptops and you will understand why Apple can charge premium pricing, Mac does not have customers per say, they have raving fans.Anyhow, this "entry level" laptop gives you plenty of power for most regular computer use; If you are a heavy gamers or a heavy database programmer, this laptop is probably not for you.

The MacBook Air. like the MacBook, comes with a13.3 -inch TFT display. It has 1.6 GB processor and 2 GB of RAM. The hard drive has a capacity of 80 GB, there is a DVD burner, built in camera, wifi, Bluetooth and a few peripheral connections. Why buy the MacBook Air? First, ultra portability; at 3 pounds and a maximum thickness of 0.76 inch, this is currently the thinnest/lightest laptop with a 13.3 display screen. Second, let's face it, it's about style and status. This laptop is not very fast, has limited space and peripherals, but if you are a light user (i.e. email, web surfing...) who wants to make statement about style, look no further, this is your laptop. Price is either $1,799 or $2,598 based on the model you are looking for.

The MacBook Pro. This laptop is the work horse in the Mac family; it has a 15.4 or 17 -inch TFT display. The frequency of its processor is either 2.4, 2.5 or 2.6 GHz based on the model you choose. The RAM is either 2 GB or 4 GB. The hard drive space goes from200 GB to 250 GB; there is a DVD burner, built in camera, wifi, Bluetooth and all the required connections. The cost goes from $1,999 to $2,799. This is the Mac that you want to use if you are a graphic artist, programmer, gamer or simply like speed, space and big screen.

Mac laptops are in a different category from all other laptops, that is both their strength and their limitation. Their operating system is still at that time far ahead of Vista in terms of ease of use, dependability and versatility. The equipment is controlled 100% by Apple and their quality is truly exceptional. On the downside, if you want use windows or have a lot of windows software you need to buy an additional Windows license on top of the regular cost of the laptops. Macs are expensive but they deliver an outstanding customer experience and for many, it's well worth the price.

Macbooks - A Review of Apple's Latest Macbook

Apple release MacBook Air that has 13 inch display screen and it has thin, light, and has a decent battery capacity. This is a new technology laptop, the ultrabooks, have become popular based on Apple's pioneering efforts. For mid-2012, Apple has updated its system with a new Ivy Bridge processor from Intel. It has some new features that didn't exist in older laptops, like USB 3.0 ports and the potential upgrade to OS X Mountain Lion. If your MacBook Air is less than a year old, you can skip this generation because the Ivy Bridge processor is only a slight speed bump over the last generation. But if you're running an older MacBook (of any kind) with a Core 2 Duo or Quad processor, now is the time to upgrade. An Ivy Bridge processor in the new MacBook Air 13-inch, with a $100 price drop? That's a pretty good deal.

Design and Features

The new MacBook Air looks very much like the previous model, the MacBook Air 13-inch (Thunderbolt) ($1,299 direct, 4 stars). It has the same wedge-shaped chassis that tapers almost to a sharp point. It even weighs the same as the previous iteration, at 2.85 pounds, like the previous model. The display is a 13.3-inch wide screen show with a 1,440-by-900 quality. This is the same quality as the past two years of 13-inch MacBook Air techniques. For enough moment, Retina show is restricted to the new MacBook Pro. The display is still shiny and obvious, though, and should keep most customers satisfied.

The system has the same aluminum unibody, silver bezel around the screen, and a similar set of physical ports on the sides (with a couple of exceptions). The new MacBook Air uses a MagSafe2 power connector that is shorter and wider than original MagSafe connector. The MacBook Air's 45-watt MagSafe 2 AC adapter has a T-shaped connector; hopefully, Apple has corrected the problems that led to frayed MagSafe cords in the late 2000s. MagSafeand MagSafe 2 are physically different connectors, so current Apple display users or users with spare MagSafe adapters lying around will need a MagSafe-to-MagSafe 2 adapter from Apple (a $9.99 purchase). The two USB ports are now USB 3.0, which are much faster than the previous USB 2.0 connectors. Of course, USB 2.0 (and USB 1.1/1.0) devices will still work with the USB 3.0 ports, though the transfer speeds will not be as fast as those of USB 3.0. The Thunderbolt connector, headphone, SDXC slot, and microphone carry over from the previous MacBook Air.

Performance

Some of the new Air models' biggest changes are found on the inside. For starters, the 2012 Airs use Intel's third-generation Core processors (also known as Ivy Bridge) for better performance, making Apple one of the first vendors to adopt these chips in their non-workhorse lines. Specifically, the 11-inch Air uses a 1.7GHz dual-core Core i5 processor with 3MB of shared level-3 cache, while the 13-inch Air uses a 1.8GHz version; a 2.0GHz i7 processor with 4MB level-3 cache is available as a built-to-order option. Like the previous Core i5 and i7 processors (known as Sandy Bridge), Ivy Bridge CPUs include hyper-threading and Turbo Boost. Hyper-threading lets the CPU's two cores be utilized by the OS as four. When only one core is needed for a task, Turbo Boost lets the chip shut down one of the two cores and bump up the clock speed of the other. Turbo Boost can reach 2.6GHz on the 1.7GHz i5 and 2.8GHz on the 1.8GHz i5. Turbo Boost on the 2.0GHz i7 CPU can reach 3.2GHz.

Last year's 13-inch MacBook Air was an already-stellar battery performer, but this year's version takes another step forward. In our video-playback battery drain test, the new 13-inch Air ran for 7 hours and 27 minutes, which is 41 minutes longer than the 2011 13-inch Air. That's the best battery life we've seen from any current MacBook, and leaves most Windows ultrabooks in the dust -- the Sony Vaio T13112FXS, a thicker ultrabook with an equivalent third-gen Intel Core i5 CPU, ran for only 5 hours and 42 minutes.

Service and support from Apple is always a dual-edged sword. Apple includes a one-year parts and labor warranty, but only 90 days of telephone support. Upgrading to a full three-year plan under AppleCare will cost an extra $249 and is pretty much a must-buy, considering the proprietary nature of Apple products. Support is also accessible through a well-stocked online knowledge base, video tutorials, and e-mail with customer service, or through in-person visits to Apple's retail store Genius Bars, which, in our experience, have always been fairly frustration-free encounters.

The June 2012 version of the MacBook Air doesn't change the equation much from what we saw last year: it's faster, has added USB 3.0, and has longer battery life, but much of the rest has stayed the same. However, the general improvements and configurations that cost $100 less than last year make the MacBook Air an even better purchase than it was a year ago, albeit a less remarkable one.

There are plenty of less expensive Windows ultrabook alternatives to the MacBook Air, but few that have the same build quality and performance. Added screen size, improved battery life, and an SD card slot still give the 13-inch Air an edge over the 11-inch model. In the world of MacBooks, this Air is still the go-to laptop to recommend... unless you have $2,200 to spend on a Retina Pro.

Long Term Impression of Apple's Macbook Air

The Macbook Air is possibly the sexiest laptop in the world, even now, years after its launch. Nothing looks quite like it, with the beautiful unibody (yes, it was actually the first unibody laptop from Apple) aluminum construction and sculpted shape. Even after owning it for a while, I still admire the pewter-like finish.

Much has been criticized about the Macbook Air though, with most remarks being about the device lacking an optical drive, its price, or not having much connectivity. Some of the criticism has been directed at the Air being underpowered as well.

While I do have my own criticisms, most of the opinions mentioned above I do not agree with. The Macbook Air is targeted at a certain type of individual. This person is fairly well-off, meaning they don't need or want one device to do it all. They don't want to watch DVDs on their laptop, because they have a great home theater at home. They do not want to use this as a work laptop, because they may already have one, or prefer to do their work on a proper powerful desktop.

I fit the demographic mentioned above, for the most part. I'm not well off though, and even if I was, I would not pay the better part of two grand for this laptop. It is most certainly not worth the retail prices that Apple charges for the various configurations. I bought mine refurbished from Apple, for about half the price of a new one. It came with the same warranty, and was essentially brand new with only 3 cycles on the battery.

So after paying half of retail and having it for a while, what do I think? I think that I made the right decision, but of course, there are shortcomings. I'll start with the good though. Apple did include the most important things. What they got right was the screen (same size as the standard Macbook, but of much better quality), the full-size, backlit keyboard, the very large and very functional trackpad, the weight and ease of carrying it and the including of a dual-core CPU, 2 GB of RAM, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi 802.11n.

All these things make it a very functional laptop. The full-size keyboard with tactile feedback that is far beyond most laptops is something I find to be absolutely necessary. I don't feel the need to go to my desktop with it. It might seem frivolous, but I love the keyboard being backlit. I also usually hate trackpads, but the exceptionally large one in the Air is great, both in terms of response, and the capability that it adds when in Mac OS X (multi-touch features). This is the only laptop where I don't feel that I need to have a mouse. With Bluetooth and N-grade Wi-Fi built in, you're connected very well wirelessly, so no dongles are necessary, which is great. I like the inclusion of a decent quality webcam and microphone; every laptop should have this.

So where does it falter? I really hate that you can't upgrade the RAM. I'm already at a point where I feel 2 GB is not enough anymore. So what can I do? Nothing. My only option is to sell it and get something else. That's no good at all. I also wonder why they couldn't just have included an optical drive. I have never felt the need for it, until recently when I installed Windows 7 on the Macbook Air (in a dual-boot configuration). It was difficult as (expletive of your choice) without an optical drive, and I didn't like the idea of buying a $100 Apple Superdrive for just this purpose. Maybe Apple should make it so that Remote Disc Sharing can be used for this purpose too, which would alleviate my only complaint about the optical drive's presence.

The speakers on the Macbook Air are not great. Actually, that was inaccurate. The speaker, not speakers, aren't great. That's right, there's only one, and you'll know it, because sound comes out the right side of the laptop. I was shocked when I first noticed this, but I've gotten used to it as the volume is okay - better than the standard plastic Macbook. My final issue is with the included hard drive. I have the model with the PATA 80GB hard drive that spins at a leisurely 4200 rpm. It can really make the experience feel slower than it should be. This can be addressed by changing the hard drive, but I'm not sure the average owner is up to that. Newer models are SATA and have faster options, even SSDs, so that takes care of this problem somewhat, but then we come back to the price.

My quick take is based on the price I paid, which is about half of the retail price. At full retail price, flat out, I don't recommend it. I do, however, think it's a good value at refurbished price, even given the shortcomings I mentioned. This is Apple's idea of a netbook. It's more usable than any netbook, and at about a grand or a bit less, is a better value than those cheaply-made, single-core netbooks for $400-$500.

The MacBook Air - Ultrathin and Superlight - Does it Deliver? A Review

At the beginning of 2008 Apple introduced the spectacular MacBook Air. Even their own computers, notebooks and other gadgets didn't offer such an elegant design and such compact measures. This is undisputed. When it comes to Apples pricing, this is where opinions differ somewhat.

The small version with Intel's Core 2 Duo P7500 CPU, 2 GByte memory and a 80-GB HDD, (which you can replace for a proud 900 Dollars with a 64-GByte-SSD) goes for around $ 2000. This Solid State Disk and a1.8-GHz-CPU can be found in the bigger MacBook Air. Price tag: $ 2.900

The power of the smaller model should be sufficient for most tasks at the office, surfing the net and playback movies, pictures and music. Even elderly and undemanding games will run. For everything else there is not enough power.

Features: Not too many.Due to the very low weight and the thin body, the list of features resembles the menu of a fancy french cuisine restaurant: short and to the point. The version tested here came with Webcam, Bluetooth, 300-MBit-WLAN and a Micro-DVI-Port, where you can attach an external monitor via the enclosed adapter.

You would expect a little more than just one USB-Port. Buying an additional USB Hub seems highly recommendable, so you can attach the -optional- DVD burner and some other devices at the same time, like memory sticks, mouse or a printer, for that matter. The m.o. burner will only work on your MacBook Air, neither on any PC nor another Apple-Notebook. In order to work the device needs about four times as much power as the USB standard allows. The widely spread Firewire and a LAN-Port are missing, also.

What you hear through the build in mono speakers is rather mediocre and can't be compared with any ordinary MP3 Player. Some say this does not suit the MacBook's otherwise very fancy and expensive appearance.

The elegant look and the smooth aluminum surface do not make for easy servicing. Only Apple technicians can change your hard drive or replace the power unit. The only thing that breaks the smooth surface is the excellent keyboard, the hidden air vents and the cover over the external jacks. Some users have found a way to at least change the battery pack, but waive the 12 month warranty by doing so.

Keypad and Touchpad: Well done and inventive. Apple doesn't imbed the keyboard into the notebooks housing, but inserts it from underneath through prefab cuts. This doesn't only look great, but also prevents these tiny cracks that catch crumbs and dust. The MacBook Air's keyboard comes with its own backlight illumination, which adapts to the surrounding light. The intensity can be regulated regardless of the one of the screen. You'll get used to it after several days and in fact the keyboard of the MacBook Air turnes out to be very pleasant.

The very large Touchpad knows some tricks it learned from the iPhone: By spreading two fingers while looking at a picture, it increases the size. With three fingers, you can use the Safari browser, but this doesn't work with the Firefox. Most of these small functionalities do not radically transform the user experience, but are part of the charm of the Apple products.

The Display, considered the best in its league, is very bright and ideal fort he outside use.

The mirrored 13.3-inch display is supported by a backlight illumination. This makes it extremely bright (410.1 cd/m²) and makes for very good contrast (973:1). No other notebook features a better display.

Windows OS: Not recommended. If you buy a MacBook Air and try to install Windows XP or Vista via the "Boot Camp" menu, you'll bound to be disappointed. The vents are running fulltime, your sound doesn't work or the display looses its sharpness. The touchpad won't work properly and there's no support for your Webcam and the SuperDrive. So it's highly recommended to run the MacBook Air with its native MacOS only.

Mobility and Battery Life: Extremely light and very good autonomy time. There is no thinner or lighter 13.3-inch Notebook around. Using the preinstalled MacOS 10.5 Leopard the 37-Watt-batterypack runs for five hours, doing a Word-Test, and 2 hours using its full CPU power. While selecting the eco mode proposed by Mac OS X and the screen luminosity set to 75% of his capacity, the MacBook Air was able to work for 3h15 before the low battery warning showed up. This are very good results and again make for excellent usage.

Conclusion

Without a doubt, Apples MacBook Air is a great designer piece. But the design cost quite a few compromises in regard to functionality: there's only one USB-Port, no optical drives and a Mono-Speaker, to name a few. The performance of the MacBook Air will suffice for light traveller users i.e. bloggers, connected fanatics, journalists, and other sales representatives. They will have no difficulty working with photos, compose bills or prepare a presentation, all profiting from his excellent flagstone LCD screen. So, the MacBook Air is a fascinating and very beautiful Notebook, that guaranties its owner a lot of greedy looks, but the same owner needs to make do with a few downsides, too.

Laptop Reviews - ASUS N61JV 16-Inch Laptop

The ASUS N61JV is a 16-inch display laptop with all the latest bells and whistles. While its size means that it is technically a desktop replacement unit, ASUS have made the laptop very thin and mobile. At 2.8kg with a six-cell battery, it is at least two times lighter than most other laptops of the same class, most of which weigh around 7kg and above. Going for a standard corporate black look with a glossy finish the laptop looks like most other laptops, which means it looks good but doesn't have any really stylized features. The laptop has a full keyboard, including the numeric keypad, but the main keys have been made larger for more comfort. The touch-pad is nice and large with multi-gesture features.

Utilizing either an Intel Core i5 or Intel Core i3 processor the ASUS N61JV can handle almost anything you can throw at it with its up to 8GB DDR3 memory and up to 640GB hard disk drive. As a laptop that uses Nvidia's Optimus technology it offers integrated graphics along with a discrete Nvidia GeForce GT325M graphics offering 1GB DDR3 VRAM. This is displayed comfortably on the laptop's 16-inch widescreen display with a resolution up to 1366 x 768. Choose between a super multi optical disc drive and a Blu-ray Combo drive to watch Blu-ray movies or burn DVDs for archiving purposes. Aside from this it also comes with a USB 3.0 port and embedded WiMAX to go with the HDMI connection and Wireless-N connectivity.

While it is limited to 720p, watching HD movies on the ASUS N61JV is simply awesome and the Nvidia Optimus technology works exactly as advertised, switching graphics when and where you need it. This means you can get over 2 hours of all the latest 3D games or more than 3 hours of non-gaming with the ASUS N61JV. While this may seem little compared to a thin-and-light, it is a lot better than other 16-inch laptops that usually average around 1 hour and a bit more. The extra processing and graphics power is not without its benefits as you can use the laptop for practically anything including office work, programming, video and photo work, gaming and HD movies. Overall the ASUS N61JV is about as good as it gets for any 16-inch laptop as it offers power and mobility along with all the latest technologies in a single package. This model is definitely something to consider for the anyone who can afford it.

Laptop Battery Care - What to Do?

You have to understand that, it doesn't matter how good you care about your laptop battery, it will lose performance and one day it will die. Of course, your exploits will slow the process of aging of your battery. In warmer environments, while the laptop is used and your battery gets warm, your battery will drain energy quicker. For this reason, the number one rule is: Keep your laptop cool. Try to keep your battery in room temperature. But don't put your battery in a freezer or refrigerator. That will make your battery useless.

The second most important point is, each filling-emptying cycle (or use) of battery will reduce performance. Of course this is not surprising. However, according to the time when you compare to the first use, it will surprise you.

When users continually keep the battery pinned and connected to the electricity battery will continue to charge and discharge process. If you use a full charged battery to at previously working warm laptop, will be discharged quicker than normal. Once a predicted level charging falls (is different for each company) to provide the current laptop battery, AC adapter fills extra electricity. Laptop battery for the increasingly old, self-discharge is connected to and depending on use, will gradually increase.
Normally lithium ion batteries will perform a 600 to 800 charge/discharge cycle. This means a life between 1,5 and 3 years. As described above, when you use your laptop battery, re-filling source (AC adapter) will remain unnecessarily pinned.

As a note, most of laptop users think it is the best to fully charge the battery after fully discharged. But this case is for Nickel Cadmium (Ni-Cd) battery method. Today's batteries have different chemical reactions and have different characteristics.

The best charging method is when lithium ion batteries occupancy rate is between 10% and 20% that's the best time to be filled again, the healthy way to slower your capacity reduce. To charge battery when it is fully empty, this is an old method and a wrong belief. Windows operating system warn us to plug in adaptor when it's the best time to charge your battery (10%, 20% etc.).

Some advises for the laptop battery usage:
1 - New laptop batteries are generally offered empty. The first filling has to be as long as possible (minimum 4 hours) and do not use the battery before fully charged.
2 - If you can keep your battery cool, keep it. But that doesn't mean to put it in freezer or something like that.
3 - Don't plug in battery when you are plugged in by means of an adaptor.
4 - Don't wait for battery to be completely empty to charge again, that method was for old type batteries.
5 - If you didn't use your battery for a while, don't try to fully charge it, use it at least its occupancy rate is 10%.
6 - If you buy a backup battery, don't wait for your battery to die, because your backup battery will also die when it waits.

5 Things to Consider Before Buying a Laptop

Technology has made it possible for you to watch satellite TV on PC. This is a dream fulfilled for some. Not long ago, people are still arguing and torn between the two choices - satellite TV and cable TV. While the competition is carrying on, we will take a closer look at these two major entertainment titans and compare them before deciding if we should take up either one or maybe to watch satellite TV on PC would be our choice.
Before we look at the option to watch satellite TV on PC, let us try to understand the background of satellite TV and cable TV. There are clearly two groups of TV viewers, one of them who are subscribers of cable TV, while the other watch satellite TV. Satellite television has always been thought to be more outstanding in terms of TV program quality. Cable TV on the other hand has so far gained an upper hand in terms of TV package pricing. One common grouse of satellite TV viewers is its complicated and not so easy satellite dish installation. To set up the satellite TV, you need to install a satellite dish of suitable size, receiver, cabling, mount and other equipment in order to start receiving satellite TV programs. Fortunately since most satellite service providers also provide free satellite dish installation as part of the package you subscribe for, it saves a great deal of trouble for satellite TV subscribers.
In terms of its availability in different geographical states, both are almost equal. Satellite TV viewers sometimes complain about the occasional disruptions in the TV transmission during bad weather conditions but just in case you are thinking cable TV viewers are spared, they are not either. This flaw is a common issue both groups of TV viewers have to contend with. This effectively levels the playing field for the two titans.

Satellite TV and cable TV are expected to continue to compete in terms of availability of service, quality and selection of TV programs and pricing. But in the midst of it, statistics are revealing that satellite TV is fast growing to become the choice of many viewers. Other than local TV entertainment, satellite TV viewers are pampered with a wide selection of entertainment, information, movies and traditional channels of satellite TV. Anyone can get to watch any program from world news, comedy to TV series, sports games and events and science documentaries using satellite TV. Your children would be entertained by the educational kids channels and cartoons.

These are essentially the two most widely accepted ways to watch TV. You might not be aware but to watch satellite TV on PC is like bringing the best out of the two popular TV entertainment methods. With a broadband internet connection, a computer that can be a desktop or laptop and proprietary PC satellite TV software installed onto your PC, you can instantly watch satellite TV on PC within minutes. This totally eliminates the need for complicated installation of the satellite dish system.

As you know, broadband internet connection is seldom interrupted and this also means that your TV viewing experience would not be interrupted and the TV picture quality is unlikely to experience distortion. You no longer have to miss any exciting episode of your favorite TV show because of a broken transmission of the TV feeds. One greatest benefit to be mentioned is the cost to watch satellite TV on PC. The only investment you are going to fork out is the one-time software cost in order to watch satellite TV on PC.

Looking at the many benefits that PC satellite TV has to offer, this modern TV viewing mode looks set to take the crown in the TV entertainment industry. Read up my satellite TV blog on more information about the software that has enabled many TV viewers to watch satellite TV on PC.

Finding The Best Laptop

A few weeks ago, my Acer Travelmate 4200 was broken. Then I tried to search for a new notebook. I went into many stores near my home but most of them didn't give us detailed information about new laptops. I said to myself, "I need more information" so I turned on my computer and opened my internet browser. After Googling several times, finally I got the image about what laptop should I buy. I went to a site which provide us all the information about best laptops. There, I read some good information and I was tempted to buy one. I set up my budget and thanks to God I have $3,000 for my new laptop.

I love to play games although I am a busy person. So I decided to buy a high-tech notebook, probably between new dell laptops and HP laptops. I went back to that laptop site then I chose to buy XPS M1710. I know this notebook is not new anymore, but still worth it for a gamer like me. After I received it, I can't resist the temptation to try all the latest games. I was astonished by its performance. With GeForce Go 7900 GTX, XPS M1710 is definitely the best laptop from my personal experience!

I compared my XPS 1710 to my friend's laptop, HP Compaq 6910p. Obviously my XPS 1710 is better but he explained many things about his notebook. Well, finally I understand. If you are a busy people like my friend, Compaq 6910p is a better choice. But if you want something good, something beautiful, and more importantly, you have enough money, than XPS products (in my case, XPS 1710) would be suitable for you.

Between Compaq 6910p and XPS 1710, there are slight differences. XPS 1710 is still much more expensive, use better graphic card, and of course better hard disk. Compaq 6910 is not as good as XPS 1710 but it's light and you can carry it wherever you want. I'm not a mobile person even though I'm busy but my friend is a very dedicated person to his job. When his boss tells him to go, he'll go as long as his boss pays his wage. If you are like my friend, Compaq 6910p or ultraportable laptops hopefully is what you need.

I have enough money to buy new laptops but if you prefer to save some hundreds of dollars, maybe it'll be wiser to buy used laptops.

It is easy to find which is new and which is used, just go to electronic stores (especially small stores) then you can find many used notebooks there. However, the choices are limited. Personally, I think eBay is the best bet for us to find many used laptops. I still remember in eBay there is one cheap HP Pavilion HDX Entertainment. I think Pavilion HDX Entertainment is a very popular product and you can get it for cheap price if you are clever enough.

Reviews of Acer Laptops - Acer Aspire One AOD150-1165 10-Inch Low Cost Netbook

Acer recently updated its line of low cost netbook offerings with the introduction of its new 10-Inch Acer Aspire One AOD150 unit. This review on acer laptops intends to provide you with an overview of what you'll get from this new Acer mini notebook unit.

Acer too, like most other vendors, is now targeting the 10-inch low cost netbook market segment. Well, to be honest, I do think that all those sub 10-inch netbooks are just way too small for the majority of users. A 10 or 11-inch would be just nice for a gadget that is supposed to fill in the gap between a regular sized notebooks and smartphones.

Specifications - Nothing New
So, lets get on with this review of the new Acer 10-inch netbook. First of all, how about a brief look at the specifications. Following is what is under the hood of this little gem from Acer.
  1. Intel Atom Processor N270 (1.60GHz, 533MHz FSB, 512KB L2 cache)
  2. 1024MB DDR2 533 MHz SDRAM Single Channel Memory
  3. 160GB SATA 5400RPM Hard Drive
  4. Windows XP Home with Service Pack 3
  5. Integrated Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950
  6. 3 USB 2.0 ports for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players
  7. Multi-in-one card reader supports Secure Digital (SD), MultiMediaCard (MMC), Reduced Size MultiMedia (RS-MMC), Memory Stick/Memory Stick PRO, and XD Picture Cards
  8. VGA monitor port
  9. 1 headphone jack and 1 microphone jack
  10. RJ-45 port for 10/100 Fast Ethernet connection
  11. Kensington lock slot
Looking at the specs, this Acer unit does not seem to be any different than every other netbooks around. So, what is so special about it? Price - Hard To Beat. I'll just be blunt up front. The thing that surely makes this Acer unit a best seller is its price. Simple. Value for money. It is more or less similar in specs and configurations with every other 10 inch netbooks.

As such, they all don't differ very much in terms of performance. Acer is certainly pushing extremely hard to capture the 10inch market share. This new model retails at USD349. Thus, it is now the cheapest within the 10-inch range of netbooks.

Battery Life - Watch At Least 2 Movies In A Single Charge
The first wave of netbooks came with 3 cells batteries that lasts for about 3 hours or less pre charge. Today, the new models come with 6 cells batteries. They now lasts from 5 - 7 hours per charge.
The Acer AOD150 comes with a 6 cells battery. Tests have confirmed that the 6 cells battery is capable of powering the unit for about 5.5 hours or so. Not long enough still? Perhaps you should then customize it with a 5,800-mAh six-cell battery. This will power you up for an amazingly close to 8 hours. The unit comes standard with a 4,400-mAh battery.

Mouse Pad Buttons - Located Where It Really Should Be
I don't know about you, but I am certainly not a big fan of those netbook units where the mousepad buttons are designed to be at the side. They feel utterly unnatural for heavy usage. I have yet to master the act of using the side buttons.
Thankfully, Acer decided to go back to the old tried and tested design of mousepads button at the bottom. No more awkwardness with the mousepads.

Display - Same Old Same Old.
Is 1024x600 to be the only video resolution made available for netbooks? I certainly don't think so. HP's latest model supports a pretty fine 1366x768 resolution.
Don't get me wrong, 1024x600 is fine. However, it would certainly be better if we can get a little bit more pixels to play with. More screen real estate to play with.

Keyboard - 89%, Not too bad. Could've been better.

At 89% of a normal sized notebook keys, the keyboard of this Acer AOD150 is certainly nothing to shout about. Of course, I would've preferred it to be a little bigger.

I find it strange that Acer didn't capitalize on the extra space provided by the 10-inch model. There's plenty of room still to put in a slightly larger keyboard.
Should You Get It?

As I've said in the first few paragraphs, nothing much separates this unit from the others. As such, there really is no valid reasons not to get this if you are indeed looking for a 10-inch netbook. Retailing at USD349, it is certainly the best choice if value for money is your main criteria.

Apple MacBook Pro MB985LL A 15.6-Inch Laptop Review

Design:The Apple MacBook Pro MB985LL/A delivers with a new lighter and thinner uni-body chassis. However, like all MacBook Pro laptops the overall design hasn't changed which is good if you like Apple's silver and glossy white design. At 5.5 pounds the laptop is lighter while maintaining the same solidly built chassis. The new 15-inch LED back-lit glass-covered display is vibrant and sharp while increasing energy efficiency. Again, like most MacBook Pro laptops the keyboard is extremely comfortable to use while the etched glass multi-gesture track pad is much larger than normal due to the button-less design.

Specifications: While the MB985LL/A doesn't surprise with a 2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, it does offer a dual graphics solution. Consisting of an integrated Nvidia 9400M and a discrete Nvidia 9600M GT, users can switch between the two on the fly, depending on their needs. While the Apple MacBook Pro MB985LL/A maintains Apple's current practice of internal non-removable batteries, they have come out with their own lithium-polymer batteries. These new batteries offer up to 7 hours worth of operation while maintaining a thinner, slimmer and easier to cool build. The laptop offers 320GB worth of hard disk drive storage, 4GB of RAM and a DVD burner SuperDrive. Connections include two USB ports, one Gigabit Ethernet port, one Firewire 800 port, one mini-DisplayPort and an SD card reader.

Features & Performance: In terms of tasks, the 15.4-inch MB985LL/A allows users the full gamut of applications including Internet browsing, office work, multimedia and gaming. While the integrated Nvidia 9400M graphics offers longer battery life, the discrete Nvidia 9600M GT is powerful enough to run the latest 3D games like Call of Duty as well as image, photo and video processing programs.

Since both can be switched to easily, the Apple MacBook Pro MB985LL/A offers users the ability to change graphics engines when they need it. The custom components like the lithium-polymer batteries also make the Apple MacBook Pro MB985LL/A one of the coolest laptops in its class. An affordable price tag makes the laptop perfect for the performance user on a budget while the top-notch features guarantee excellent performance. At the moment, this laptop model is retailing at just around $1815 each.
